Review Copies: I Can't Read What I Don't Have
Having written my Locus Online best of for 2007, I realized I got more books and graphic novels for review than ever before last year. So I'm not writing this post because I have a lack of material to cover. It's more in aid of trying to be as comprehensive as possible in 2008. I'm already on the reviewer lists for most major NY and indie SF/F publishers. But I also review graphic novels and do features on non-genre work. Here's a breakdown of where I currently review, and what I review there. Note that although I do reviews for the Washington Post, Sci Fi Weekly, and Publishers Weekly, I do not choose what I review for those publications. Nor, for PW, do I usually review SF and F, in case you're wondering. I also often mention my reviews on this blog, providing additional coverage.Because the majority of my own anthology projects and writing tend toward a certain part of the spectrum, I think some publishers and publicists assume that my reading tastes are in that same area. Um, not true. I love anything done well and I read tons of mysteries, space operas, mainstream literary, and heroic fantasy books in addition to everything else.Amazon.com - I do three to four SF/F features a week for the Amazon book blog, which also appears on the Amazon Daily blog. Any interviews I do also populate the relevant book's sales page. In addition to the SF/F features, I post about graphic novels and mainstream, non-genre books. Usually, as I was this past year, I'll be asked to put together Amazon.com's Top 10 list of SF/F titles. Again, my range is fairly wide--my brief is not to reflect my taste but to provide a broad variety of features that will appeal to an equally broad readership.Bookslut.com - I do a monthly comics/graphic novels column for Bookslut. This includes ALL kinds of graphic novels, not just genre material.Locus Online - I'm usually asked to do a year's best summation of some kind for them.Realms of Fantasy - I'm the second reviewer for Realms, after Paul Witcover, and I review five to six novels, collections, and/or anthologies per issue. I also do a graphic novels column for Realms.SF Site - I do a column for them six times a year that usually includes reviews of fantasy and SF.The Year's Best Fantasy & Horror - I do the yearly graphic novels summation for this antho from St. Martin's Press. If you want a book to be considered for review, please send it to:Jeff VanderMeerPOB 4248Tallahassee, FL 32315Publicists can reach me through the comments feature on this blog or my email address as found on this blog.
