Hi, there, I am from Brazil and we have many fans of the new weird way of fantasy.
That inspired here a very recent movement among some of us called: "Weird Pop!",
influenced mostly by the 50-60's Pop Art and of course the weird. Normally using 21 century fantasy world and describing in great part the pop, fast food life in this secundary world. And the question is what should we do to develop even more this stuff. Thanxs.

I just finished reading this. Really great stuff. The structure is an important part of that, to be sure. Though, I'm puzzled about the Moorcock inclusion -- not that Moorcock shouldn't be included, but the story itself didn't have a feel or content that I would see as a direct stimulus.

"Watson's Boy" has had the most impact upon me of any short story I have read since I first discovered Borges. And what's more, in that tale Evenson puts a personal experience to the distant, cosmological philosophy of Borges. Frankly, it made me realize just how weird I'm not, how weird my writing hasn't been. A nice a kick in the pants.

I'd venture that Jonathan Barnes signals a departure into the "Next Weird." Don't know who else I'd put into the ranks with him, though.

undeadbydawn says:
I still end up disappointed on 90% of shopping trips

Tell me more about it. I recommend Amazon, it took them only 4 days to ship to Warsaw, so I guess they are able to reach everywhere within a week. You just need to know what you are looking for. ;)

And the anthology is one of the best books on literature I've ever read. I can only imagine what it takes to choose the right texts, not to mention you managed to present the context of the NW origin. To be honest, it was more like a theoretical background of a literary movement. Great job, both of you. It changed the way I understand the word "anthology". :) Thanks.

hehe.... I mailed them today subtly hinting that copies would be nice. Somewhat doubt they'll go for it though - p'raps you'd have more luck being a: an actual published author b: someone with more than five regular visitors.

New Weird and Secret Life are my two must-buys right now. I will probably have to Amazon them.
Meanwhile I'm trying to boost Black Static magazine as much as possible. Check it out if you can. I'm currently writing up a feature.

I think you should be able to find New Weird on Amazon UK in stock. Maybe I'm wrong. The internet's still your best bet, especially when an author hasn't had anything out in awhile. Shriek came out in 2006-07.

What would be really nice is sorting out the distribution. Other than Steampunk and Shreik, I CANNOT find any of your books, other than on Amazon and that's usually via US import. Scottish bookstores are getting a little better at stocking the likes of Mieville but I still end up disappointed on 90% of shopping trips. While browsing Amazon is nice, it's still impossible to beat walking into a bookstore and seeing shelf upon shelf of spines gleaming at me. I would have bought The New Weird months ago if I could physically find a copy.

One of my plans for my own site is to push the 'New Weird' as hard as I can, along with independent [read non-Hollywood] horror films. I can't do that if I can't get stuff to shout about. While I am aware that my own influence will very likely remain nil to minimal, I sure as hell intend to try.

Greetings from Scotland, incidentally
