Twitterface

Well, I give up. I’m going to be on Facebook through my mobile phone, so I’ve synched up Facebook and my Twitter. If you want to follow me on Twitter, my Facebook status will post there, along with links to blog posts. I’m not a huge Twitter fan, but that means I’ll have a presence there until that daft micro-fragmentation platform withers away (right about the time that the nano-dinosaurs decide to re-upload into their former mighty sizes and do away with electricity and the intertubes entirely). I should also soon synch up my blog to Facebook. Fact is, Facebook is getting very crowded, and it’s definitely headed in the direction of becoming a robust networking tool. I’m not sure I really like that, but I’m also not willing to fight it.

So:

Me on Twitter

Me on Facebook

Me on Crackbook. (I meant this as a joke, but when I Googled it…it actually existed!)

Me on Fartbook.

If anyone cares. Frankly, we’ll see if I’m on either in a month, but I do find that when I’m out and about, it’s not much of a distraction to post from my phone. I tend to agree with Charlie Stross that in a sense these social media platforms are just glorified public versions of email. On the other hand, a couple of creative projects have been started because of connections made through Facebook, so…

I use Facebook mainly to keep in touch with friends and family, and to be honest I would be uncomfortable with mixing that and using it for promotional/public purposes (if I actually had something to promote, ha ha). I’ve friended some individuals that could be considered “public figures” and there’s no real way to tell how welcome that is.

Eh, maybe it’s my misanthropy peeking through.

I’m not using it for promotional purposes. I don’t send out invites to events cluttering up people’s inboxes. I just post blog post URLs and status updates. My blog posts are only a bit about my own stuff. But I do think Facebook is going the way of MySpace. Question is: to what extent? And will it survive if it’s less personal and more public.

Mostly, I like to keep up on Facebook with people I know. But I also don’t want to be fragmented going from blog to Facebook to Twitter all the time.

I have a Facebook account, but I rarely do anything other than have my blog posts appear there for the moment, as I’m waiting until the end of the school year to do anything major with it, like chatting with people, due to wanting to keep my professional life separate from my public (students have an annoying way of finding out things posted on such things, I’ve noticed).

Will look at those links later, once I’ve managed to get back into the school year sleeping routine. Waking up at 11 PM is NOT fun.

I think Googling things calls them into existence.

Twitter is on fire talking about the new iPhone 3GS, so it’ll be interesting to see how much 3GS.com sells for this Thursday. Keep an eye on how much the site is going for here: http://greatdomains.com/auction/auction_detail.php?language=us&auction_id=57282&tracked=&partnerid=32392&language=us
