I made a point of special ordering this new edition in before I started my thesis, as 'Epic Pooh' was the instigator for my thesis topic. In terms of the book as a whole, I think Moorcock relies on rather large block quotes a little too much, as I would've liked to read more from him directly as his non-fiction makes such an interesting read. His points are clearly made though, and he offers a critique of fantasy that isn't often seen in many other works. It's refreshing to read someone who loves and knows the genre but doesn't feel the need to put Tolkien on a pedastel. I love Tolkien, but there's too much excellent fantasy out there to focus on him all the time. In W&WR, Moorcock reminds us of that, I think.

Thanks for the article Jeff. I found out about you in connection with my love for The Church and have ordered the Shriek CD. I am also presently reading (re-reading) the most recent Elric collection and am finding I remember many parts of the stories through the haze of 25 or so years since originally buying the mass markets. I also have waiting for me the most recent REH only collecton of Conan stories with art by Brom. The years are compressing just when I needed the reconnection to my youthful passions. I'm glad you're out there expressing your passions.

James, I enjoyed this book quite a bit when I read it two years ago, plus it contains the (in)famous "Epic Pooh" essay that years later still has the power to rile up quite a few epic fantasy fanatics, or at least those who are near fanatical in their worship of Tolkien.

Nope, I don't know about Jones's book, but I like her work. I'll seek it out.

I'm glad you posted your afterword, as this one somehow passed me by. It sounds superb, and frankly, there's not a great deal of fantasy criticism that I really like, so I'm doubly glad to know about it.

Which reminds me: Do you know anything about Gwyneth Jones's Deconstructing Starships?
