I'm somewhat disturbed that we've given the title of decadent to a group of people who are only thoroughly engaged in reality. That isn't decadence, if anything wasting your life contemplating absurdities like how many virgins you'll have in heaven or the qauntity of angels that may fir on a pin, or if God can creata rock so big he cannot lift it. Those thoughts are decadent!

I know it's just alabel and msy be an inappropriate one, but the fact that these people were given such a title says something about those who applied it, something sad... And alarming

Lucretius was one of my favorite reads at St. John's. Wholly decadent in so many ways. The idea that he might have run around using his ideas as pickup lines is very appealing. The original Pick-Up Artist.

Hey--thanks for the comment. I am so looking forward to going back to this book at my leisure. I was somewhat rushed by a Washington Post deadline I have today.

Absolute gem of a book. I also have a deep, abiding fondness for the Greeks and Romans. Now I must go unearth my copy and read it again.
