One of Dominik Petr’s illos for the Czech edition of Veniss Underground. Apparently, for promotional purposes, they have art done for excerpts published in magazines.

Never again will Meerkats look so benignly evil.

Thank you for this observation. The illustration depicts the eerie situation when Nicholas succumbs to Quin (in which the meerkat played its part). Though meerkats are in fact quite nice creatures, I have tried to depict them as Quin’s sinister messengers from the Veniss world. “Veniss Underground” which was published also in the Czech Republic in the “New Weird” line of the Laser-books publishing house has
made such an impression on me that I made some simple sketches while reading. Now I am returning to them in my free time and transform them into proper pictures. A great impulse to do this was meeting Jeff
Vandermeer at Parcon 2008 in Pilsen at which I was also invited as an illustrator.
