Yay, Malaprops. I lived in Asheville for about a year, and Malaprops was a pretty nifty little bookstore. It was probably the most popular one, too, despite the Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million outside of downtown. Even a BAM manager called it “a real bookstore”. I saw Dave Eggers give a reading there about a month before I moved away.

Make sure you check out Downtown Books and News. It’s a pretty decent used bookstore. The Reading Corner is another good one, right on the edge of downtown. And see if that ice cream place is still right next to it, ’cause it was good. And check out Beanstreets. It’s a little coffe/sandwich/breakfast/lunch place that’s pretty darn tasty.

Bar wise you should check out Jack of the Wood. The Mellow Mushroom is neat too, and they make some crazy ass pizza. There’s also the Asheville Pizza & Brewing Company, but it’s not exactly downtown. They have beer and pizza and a movie theatre that plays second run films. Of course, there’s like a dozen other bars in the downtown area.

    Sigh. I miss Asheville.
