Books Received–April 8

Jeff VanderMeer • April 8th, 2008 @ 11:02 am • Book Reviews

Lots of Penguin niche mysteries today, including one for quilters and another for gardeners! Just speaks to the popularity of mysteries these days, I think.

Also, an ARC for Aqueduct Press’ Nisi Shawl collection.

Anyone read her work? What’s it like?

You’ll also note the really quite inventive spine on the book at the bottom of the pile, which I tarted up after Tessa’s complaint on the last batch of books that the spines were boring. Is this much better? I’m not sure…

I’ve read a few of Shawl’s stories in Sheree R. Thomas’s Dark Matter and Nalo Hopkinson and Uppinder Mehan’s So Long Been Dreaming anthologies and enjoyed them greatly. The fact that there is a collection of her stories out makes me very eager to read/review this. I guess I’ll have to look up Aqueduct Press’s contact info to inquire about this.

I recall a very good Shawl story, Cruel Sistah’, which was picked up for YBF&H the year before last. Think I’ll keep an eye out for Filter House.

I really like Nisi’s work, it’s interesting and quick. You should like it.

That wasn’t a complaint, just an observation. There was no call to go about defacing the poor little thing, you wretched heathen! IS NOTHING SACRED? (But I like the fishies. You could totally get a gig on the side designing book spines.)

  5. Jeff VanderMeer says:

    So…stick to the fishies?

    Jeff

  6. Sir Tessa says:

    I am partial to fishies.

And that squashed lizard crocodile thing.

  7. Jen A says:

Now be honest, the stuff in the corners is really Gray Cap hieroglyphics isn’t it? Isn’t it!? No one better be coming up thru the floors for me now, dude. I am already beset by giant moths over here so I have my hands full.

Personally, I dug the water eel, shark, fishies, snail, squashed lizard-thing, and even the fox. But somewhere out there Evan Kilgore is wondering why you drew a dildo on his book.

    (I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist. I am a weak, weak, weak person.)

  8. Jeff VanderMeer says:

    LOL!!!! I suck as illustrator!

  9. Evan Kilgore says:

Jen A is right: Why did you draw a dildo on my book?
