Arthur C. Clarke, Dec. 1917 – March 2008

Unfortunately news that Arthur C. Clarke died today at the age of 90. I can still remember how his “The Nine Billion Names of God” story blew me away. And “The Star.”

My short Amazon piece on his death, here. A longer piece tomorrow.

There are two sf stories that I remember reading at a very young age that spun me round and knocked me over backwards. One was The Nine Billion Names of God. I can still remember shivering when I read the last line.

(The other was a story that involved sentient Kodiak bears and I have *no* earthly idea what the hell else it was about, what it was called, or who it was by. But man, I loved those bears.)

Sad news, indeed. “The Star” is probably my favorite SF story. Childhood’s End is one of my favorite books.
