Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse Intro

Just turned in the intro to the next compilation of Ben Templesmith’s Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse comic. I’m not sure when it’s coming out, but above find a little teaser about Wormwood, and below a snippet from my intro.

Some long-dead painter from the Renaissance once said, “Be normal in your life so you can be strange in your art.” As far as I can tell, Ben Templesmith resembles that remark–one of the hardest working guys out there, one of the nicest people you’re likely to correspond with…and yet, his talent is seriously weird. Weird in a way Decadents like Baudelaire and Rimbaud might admire. Yet also weird in a way the Ramones and Iggy Pop might admire.

Good to know the second collection is coming! Weird that you’re writing the intro for it. I would have guessed, I dunno, Warren Ellis. But OK.

You know, I was just wondering the other day why all the traditional cel animation that’s done nowadays is flat-shaded line art. An animated Wormwood, done in a style akin to Templesmith’s, would kick ass!

I dunno how weird it is, Tim. He’s done the cover for the limited of Shriek, I’ve been reviewing graphic novels for awhile, been an Eisner judge, am getting involved in comics projects generally, and we’ve been talking about a collaboration. But thanks for the thought.

It’s funny, the first thought I had when seeing the cover of Wormwood Vol. 1 was that Ben’s artwork would be a perfect fit for one of Jeff’s books. I’m beyond happy that he’s doing the cover for the limited Shriek.
